A patent protects new technical inventions against the unauthorized use by third parties. By the grant of a patent, the patentee has the right of exclusive use of the technology protected by the patent. Obviously, this can generate a competitive advantage and companies in today's economy and with the prevailing competition have to deal with this opportunity. This development is also reflected in the number of patent applications, which have increased in recent years.
In the period from 1995 to 2008, the number of German patent applications worldwide has nearly doubled. Within the year 1995 69.583 patent applications received at the German Patent and Trademark Office, while in 2008 already 136 175 inventors wanted to patent their developed technology. This development illustrates not only the innovation and performance of German companies, but also the requirement of a patent to hold in international markets or market technological inventions in the relevant markets successfully. The international patent statistics from 2011 shows, that every fourteenth registered patent comes from German companies.
In the global comparison of 2012, Germany comes the 3rd place with13.3% of the patent applications. At the top of the patent applications stands the USA with 24.6%, followed by Japan at the 2nd place with 20.1%. There were European companies that made up the top of patent applications in eight of the ten most important technological fields. The main fields of technology for this calculation are transportation, automotive, instrumentation, drives, pumps, organic chemistry, as well as medical technology and the field of computer and IT industry.
According to published statistics, the automotive industry is the most innovative industry in Germany. At least if you based this statement on the number of patents or patent applications.
This statistic leads Robert Bosch GmbH with 3,602 registered patents, led by Daimler AG with 2,014 patent applications. Other leading companies in the field of patent applications are Schaeffler and GM Global Technology Operations LLC, who filed applications by the German Patent and Trademark Office for newly developed technologies.
